The Lofoten Story – A 5-Hour Journey Through the Islands

Join us on a 5-hour journey through Lofoten, where beautiful landscapes meet centuries of history, fishing traditions, art and local life. Together with a local guide, you’ll discover some of the stories behind the places you see along the way.

Lofoten Cathedral

Built for the Fishermen

Our first stop is the impressive Lofoten Cathedral in Kabelvåg. Built in the late 1800s, the church became an important gathering place during the great Lofoten fisheries, when thousands of fishermen travelled here each season.

Kabelvåg

Vikings, Fishing & Wartime History

We continue to Kabelvåg harbour and breakwater. Kabelvåg’s history stretches back more than 1,000 years, with fishing and trade making it an important place already during the Viking Age. Here, your guide shares stories about the village, the famous Lofoten fisheries and its history during the Second World War, while we enjoy the views from the harbour.

Henningsvær

Art, Shops & Fishing Village Life

Next is Henningsvær, one of Lofoten’s most characteristic fishing villages. You’ll have around one hour to explore its narrow streets, harbour, small local shops, cafés and creative atmosphere. You can also visit Gallery Lofoten, where Northern Norwegian art tells stories of Lofoten’s landscapes, fishermen and coastal life through the years.

Gimsøya

From Mountains to Open Coast

We continue to Gimsøya, where the landscape opens up into farmland, beaches and wide coastal views. Here, we stop at Gimsøy Church, where the history of the church site stretches back to the 12th century. The present wooden church was built in 1876 and stands beautifully by the open sea.

Unstad

From Coastal Village to Surf Culture

Our final stop takes us through the mountains to Unstad, a small village surrounded by dramatic peaks and facing directly towards the Norwegian Sea. For generations, people here lived from fishing and farming, while today Unstad is best known for something quite different – surfing. Its exposed location and powerful waves have made this remote Lofoten village one of the most famous surfing destinations in Norway.

Take some time to explore the beach and enjoy the scenery before an optional coffee stop and one of Unstad’s famous cinnamon buns. A cozy ending to the day before we make our way back.

A fantastic experience with Hooked on Lofoten! We had five people on the boat, and the guide was absolutely great. Even though the fishing season is quite challenging right now, I managed to catch three large cod and several saithe. A really wonderful extra service at the end: the guide professionally gutted and cleaned the catch, so I was able to take the fish with me perfectly prepared to eat. Highly recommended!

Erland is an incredibly knowledgeable guy with bags of humour too - ask about his fish butchery! We got a unique experience that we won’t forget in a hurry. Top class, would recommend to anyone in Lofoten (and although not included, the sauna and dip in the sea after was the cherry on the top!). Talkative in a good and relaxed way and was both joking and telling anecdotes. After the fishing trip he instructed us how to take care of every part of the fish and cut up the fish for us. We also had the Hooked and cooked experience were Erland instructs the chef how he should serve every bit of the fish, and the chef at Nyvågar was incredible in making Erlands vision come to life. I wish we’d found them sooner because this was by far our favorite experience in Lofoten. Erland was very genuine and knowledgeable, let us know what to expect, and was very kind and accommodating with our 4yo— even setting up a child’s fishing rod for him to use. They’re also nice, respectful guys who felt like an extension of our group and were able to adapt to our needs easily- making for an even more enjoyable trip. Would book again if I’m ever lucky enough to be back in Lofoten ;)
